You can not loose fat and gain muscle at the same time.
If you will have a strong diet- your muscles need energy, and protein to grow.
Firstly, loose some weight, jogging, swimming, not eating fast food!

If your trying to lose weight to drop to 185 you should focus on losing the weight with cardio exercises so you don’t just gain muscle instead of losing weight. When you get to 185 you start then training for explosive power.

strong diet, alot of cardio exercises, and just basic weight lifting. Since this is in the martial arts section I assume you also do some sort of martial art or arts, continue doing martial arts if you do, martial arts is one of the top exercises in the world for losing weight. Depending on what martial arts.

Cardio (rope skipping, running ect) will make you lose the most calories if you combine this whit healthy food and weight lifting you will have results in no time. And yes it’s Always better to train functional ( use as much muscle as possible when doing a exercise) then training to isolated (bodybuilding). Good exercises for overall power are : pull ups, dead lift, squats, jumping squats, military press (try to do them explosive).

I geuss you do martial arts? If not then you should train more like a bodybuilder to lose weight.
